This quaint town in North Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite destinations – both in the summer and in the winter. I’m lucky enough to have a friend with a cabin at Tahoe Donner, so it’s one of my most reasonable getaways year-round!
Lisette and Alison at Sugarbowl.
Lisette and family at Squaw Valley
I love visiting in the winter and skiing at our usual spot, Sugarbowl, as well as at Northstar, Squaw Valley and other neighboring ski parks. We tend to frequent Sugarbowl to beat the large, more touristy crowds and have a more local-feeling experience, while still having access to challenging and varied terrain. In the summer I like to hike and explore the mountain lakes via kayak.
Coffeebar … delicious donut holes.
One of my all time favorite spots in this cozy little town is Coffeebar. This place is a goldmine for gluten free folks. I frequently get the gluten free pumpkin donut holes, muffins or paleo bowls while hanging out at this artsy little cafe off Jibboom St. Bonus – they have (limited) free off-street parking for patrons. Zano’s Pizza is also another great spot for GF meals.
Sunset at Truckee Thursdays.
This summer I went up for the Fourth of July holiday and stayed til the weekend, which gave me a chance to check out Truckee Thursdays for the first time! This lively street fair brings together a variety of food trucks, art, and live music to deliver a fun, festive experience for locals from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. Beer, wine and mixed drinks are available, in addition to a wide array of flavorful and diverse food trucks. Running all summer long, this event is packed, and so popular most resorts run buses to ferry people to and from the event in order to reduce car congestion. Tahoe Donner runs bus service, as well as Northstar and a number of other communities.
Paddling Donner Lake
Another great perk of staying at Tahoe Donner is access to their recreational facilities. We often frequent the hot tub and Donner Lake. TD residents have access to a lovely little beach, with swimming areas and a boat ramp. I was able to take a nice swim with my bestie and also get in a little paddle on the east end of the lake.
